Our online shopping and delivery service offers the next best thing to having a farm on your doorstep - our suppliers buy direct from local markets and farmers each day ensuring our produce is very fresh. And we aim to be cheaper than our competitors and easier on the planet!

Traditional supermarkets that buy and hold stock (for up to 7 days by some estimates) with large retail premises have a comparatively huge environmental foot print, plus each customer that visits the supermarket in a car creates even more pollution and traffic. 

Food Direct cuts out waste and pollution with its sustainable business model and particularly efficient use of transportation systems - delivering quality fresh food (an excellent range of 6000+ products) to households every day.

Overseas, similar direct delivery models have been estimated to be more environmentally friendly than walking to the supermarket, moreover each Food Direct delivery van reduces the number of cars on the road by up to 40 car journeys everyday.

Packaging

Food Direct has carefully evaluated the alternatives – plastic, paper, bio-plastic (such as those derived from corn starch) and oxo-biodegradable plastic.

We use recycled banana boxes for most of your groceries. When we must use a shopping bag, our choice of shopping bag is oxo-biodegradable plastic – which are made from unavoidable petroleum by-products with minimal additional energy use.

Paper bags and bio-plastic bags require the use of valuable arable land to produce (and can negatively influence food prices and deforestation), have relatively high energy production costs and often create harmful chemical by-products and excessive carbon emissions in the production process.

The Food Direct oxo-biodegradable bags break down / biodegrade in landfill quickly - dramatically reducing the size of landfill, and can be recycled with your other plastics (unlike bio-plastic) with no impact on the recycling process.
